I've recently bought a new, higher resolution Webcam for MSN etc. I will post the manufacturers details after I check it at home tonight, but I have a general question first. Every time I boot, Windows says it has detected new hardware and wants to run the Add New Hardware (ANH) wizard. Note that I've already run the mini-CD which came with the camera, and the device appears under My Computer, and it works perfectly.

Nonetheless, every boot time leads to the same scenario of Windows wanting to run ANH. When I go into Device Manager the yellow question mark comes up under Other Devices, and its Single Chip CIF. I know from experience (with my previous Webcam) that this relates to the Webcam. I resolved this issue at the time but I can't remember how I did it!

I'm certainly not interested in getting this ANH message every time I boot up, even if I just ignore it! Given that the device is working and recognised by specific brand name, what is Windows problem? What does CIF stand for?

Is it some generic driver needed by Windows in addition to the specific one which comes on the CD with the device (which in my case only contained an.exe file which ran and set the cam up)? I thought of simply disabling the CIF device in Device Manager but presumed this would either prevent the cam from working, or just come up again next time I booted.

Its not a show stopper but I hate having yellow question marks under Device Manager the system should be clean. The CIF comm interface is a common issue with webcams. You've already resolved it with the download you detailed above -- the Add New Hardware wizard won't run anymore as it now has both the common interface driver (not specific to your camera) and the drivers for your specific camera. What you downloaded wasn't 'for my webcam' -- but it is what you needed. The generic CIF drivers. Bottom line: Problem resolved -- your system is now fine:-) [I agree, by the way, that you should have a 'clean' Device Manager:-) ].
