Since the DVD doesn't contain the key, then isn't option 4 'borrow a W7HP DVD from someone and install using the key that's on your Dell'? Isn't the value/price in the key and not the disk itself? Any windows 7 disk for your edition will do. You can get one from a friend, a shop, or an alternate source on the internet.

You just have be sure that it's an unaltered copy. That's the tricky part.

If you have the original key, you can d/l from here: and burn to a blank disk. You'll have to do everything manually: enter the key, d/l and install all drivers (go to the support section at Dell.com, type in your service tag and select the drivers for Win 7 x64) and all your programs and other stuff.

Dell utilities not available on the support site you can't get back. The copy is 100% legit, it came with the machine and is on the back of it here. Sadly Dell does not give you a disk. They want you to make a system recovery disk. I forgot to do that. This thing takes a few mins to load internet explorer.

If you can still boot into it, look for a 'Dell Backup and Restore' Utility - that has the option to use the built-in recovery tool. Oh for cryin' out loud. The WHY doesn't matter.

Both questions matter. Maybe the issue can be repaired without a reinstall. That should probably be explored. Its also a good idea to have the disk, in the event it does need a reinstall, now or in the future.
