Glaser, I've owned about 4 pre 1924 Excelsiors and they all had a frame number on the seat post forging just behind the seat post hole. My friend Charlie Carter made note of the frame numbers on every Excelsior he came upon and he never saw any correlation, or numerical progression that made any sense. I would bet those numbers were relevent to in house documents at the Excelsior factory but the only usable document that survived the ceasation of Excelsior and Henderson production was the Balack list and it only has engine numbers.
The AMA was given every surviving document the Schwinn family had back in the mid 1990's and it all went into a vault. A few members of the AMCA were allowed to see it but I understood that some honcho at the AMA intended to do a thesis (and probably a book) using that material so it was closesly guarded. I have no idea what the current status of that literature is, but the people I know that have seen that stuff said there was nothing earth shattering in the pile, but it is still a lot of really interesting Ex/Hen history that I doubt will ever see the light of day in my lifetime.
Hi Glaser31, the Super X frame number is on the side of the forging that joins the tank top tube, bottom tube, and the two upper rear stays of the frame (see the photo). Axeric, I havent been able to work out any corelation on frame to engine numbers, but I have noticed on my frames that there is a single digit below the frame number. I have check this on other frames from 1917 - 1923 and the single digit appears to indicate the year the frame was made (8 for 1918, 9 for 1919 etc). In the case of the Super X frame in the photo you can see a 6 on its side which corresponds to a 1926 frame.
This is only a theory, but has checked out on the 10-15 frames that I have looked at recently. 10468 Cheers Ben. Axeric, Interesting that your '16 frame does not have the year identifier number. I havent had the chance to check any '15 or '16 frames over here, but I did see a 1917 frame two weeks ago that had the '7' below the frame serial number. Out of interest this frame also had the removable tube below the fuel tank.
I suppose it is very possible that export only models had this identifier, or that it was only introduced in 1917. See the photo for attached for what it looks like on my 1918 frame. Glaser31, did you find any single digit on your frame like in my Super X frame photo? Cheers, Ben10472. Those are wonderful documents Michael. There is so little available for Excelsiors and Hendersons.
I also have a 1919 Henderson that is very difficult to document. Over the years, myself and others have compared our parts, and shared what little could be found for them. Unfortunately, it was a motorcycle that Schwinn didn't want to build and the sooner he could get on with the K model, and DeLuxe, the sooner he could relegate the Detroit style Henderson to history.
In my early research, I got the best information from Excelsior/Henderson friends in Europe. For whatever reason, the scant information on Ex/Hen motorcycles survived in Europe.
